(2020)

Selected works for the exhibition ‘Hinterland’ at Aatma.

hinterland: /ˈhɪntəland/ noun

1.the remote areas of a country away from the coast or the banks of major rivers.
"the hinterland of southern Italy"

2.an area lying beyond what is visible or known.
"the strange hinterland where life begins and ends"

“‘Beyond the Visible explores the areas that lie beyond this within the everyday.

In this project, the artist explores the uniformity of suburban housing in the UK and the insignificance of location on their ‘copy and paste’ appearance. These are built for purpose family homes, many of which are purchased by young couples who go on to build their lives there.

The artist uses this concept to describe how they are an example of a ‘strange hinterland where life begins and ends’. The artist acknowledges that the stories of what lays behind these brick walls are unknown, however, the presence of paintings and signs adorning the windows are a reminder that no matter our human experience, in times of crisis, we are in one way or another living the same lives.”
